20TH ANNUAL DAY OF CARING
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2017
8am Kickoff Breakfast at Covelli Centre
The United Way Day of Caring officially kicks off the annual campaign with a breakfast and hands-on volunteer opportunities. United Way partners with the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation, City of Youngstown, and the American Red Cross to complete the City's largest "Fight Blight" project of the year. More than 700 volunteers sign up for the Day of Caring with 500 of those volunteers working on the YNDC/ City of Youngstown Project. The rest of the volunteers go to United Way's partner agencies throughout Mahoning County.
In 2016, approximately 500 of volunteers spent the day working along the Market Street Corridor in four areas between Hudson Avenue, South Avenue, Evergreen Avenue, and Midlothian Boulevard. They focused their efforts on 70 blighted homes and properties. Volunteers cleaned up debris, overgrown vegetation, and boarded up the vacant homes.
Teams with the American Red Cross installed dozens of smoke detectors in homes. The other volunteers spent the day at 16 non-profit agencies throughout the Mahoning Valley.
You can be one of the hundreds of volunteers at the Day of Caring!
