Volunteer with Vello
United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley has been committed to helping children read, as well as pass their 3rd grade reading guarantee. Our goal through our Success After 6 initiative is to provide wrap around services and supplemental resources to teachers and schools to assist them in their classrooms to achieve those goals. We cannot do this work alone, and we know there are passionate individuals out there willing to help us by volunteering their time. However, at the same time, we understand that this takes a commitment that it sometimes difficult with our schedules and day-to-day life. Vello helps provide a volunteer experience remotely from your office or home!
What is Vello?
The Vello program is a weekly 30-minute one-on-one session that offers the opportunity for volunteers to tutor students in reading through a safe and secure digital setting. Together, students and tutors read e-books using simple screen sharing and audio.
How Vello Works:
Vello provides a background check, training, and full-time support so everything stays simple and easy. Teachers post schedules and access teaching tools on the portal. The tutors log in to the classroom schedule and sign-up for 30-minute reading sessions. Volunteers commit to one session each week. Tutors click a link to connect to sessions from their email or calendar- similar to a webinar. The assigned Vello students join from a secure computer inside their classroom or computer room. Through this simple screen share and audio, tutors and students read e-books, complete comprehension quizzes, and write summaries. All this can be done from the comfort of your office or home. No travel time needed!
