ONE CHILD AT A TIME, ONE BOOK AT A TIME.
DOLLY PARTON'S IMAGINATION LIBRARY
Access to books and educational materials is one of the single biggest barriers to literacy development. A child who has trouble reading in 3rd grade is less likely to gradute from high school. When kids can't catch up they pay the price. With all the requirments our children face in school today, the key is to start them on the right tracks as early as possible.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library may sound almost too simple to be true, but by reading regularly with your children during their preschool years, you are giving them the biggest boost toward a successful eduction.
It's a simple concept with a big impact. All children in Mahoning County between birth and age five are eligible to receive one FREE high quality book every month, mailed directly to them at home. He or she can look forward to new and exciting reading adventures until their fifth birthday. These books are selected by a panel of early childhood literacy experts and are age and developmentally appropriate.
Parents/guardians simply sign up their child and the books start arriving between 8-12 weeks later, continuing each and every month until the child reaches his or her fifth birthday. Up to 60 free books over the period of five years. Oftentimes, these books become the main source of books in the household.
The early years are the learning years, and early investment in a child matters to EVERYONE. The United Way of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley in collaboration with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County created a "Reading Buddies" program.
The Library will provide the "Reading Buddies" with professional training on early childhood literacy. They will learn proven methods to enhance the reading experience with children. This is a one-time training that is provided free through United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley and the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.
Once trained, the "Reading Buddies" will be deployed throughout Mahoning County at special events held at locations where the Imagination Library is being promoted. These include community/neighborhood centers, faith-based organizations, library branches, social service agencies, etc. United Way will coordinate with these locations to schedule and promote the "Reading Buddies" events.
At these events, "Reading Buddies" will work with the parents/guardians to help them learn how to read books with their children (who are encouraged to attend the events) that best supports literacy, language and vocabulary development. The "Reading Buddies" will also share how to create follow-up activities that extend children’s learning.
