Taft Promise Neighborhood

You are here

The community hub of the Taft Promise Neighborhood is Taft School.  Through this crucial focal point, most of the programs and resources of over 50 partner organizations are provided to engage parents, students, and residents in striving for greater quality of life.  This includes pre-K readiness, after-school programming, health screenings, access to healthy foods, community gardens, job training, housing repair, reentry, civic engagement, and more!

The five key areas essential to strengthening and revitalizing this Youngstown neighborhood are 1) Education, 2) Health & Wellness, 3) Jobs & Economy, 4) Neighborhood & Safety, and 5) Resident Engagement.

For more information, go to the Taft Promise Neighborhood website.

EDUCATION

Led by United Way of Youngstown & Mahoning Valley and Youngstown City Schools, the TPN Education Council delivers educational programs that support students and families from cradle to career. Among the many members of this council are Junior Achievement, The Mahoning County Educational Service Center, SMARTS, the YMCA, and the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

“Through adult education programs coordinated by Taft Promise Neighborhood
with Youngstown City Schools, I got my GED.  It got me on a path where I could
apply for a job and get hired and also further my education.
It made my life better. I never would have been able to get a job without
getting the GED first.”
- Dara Cook

HEALTH & WELLNESS

The Health & Wellness Council, led by Mercy Health and the City of Youngstown Health Department, works to improve health and well-being and promote healthy behaviors. Just a few of the additional partners serving this council are Akron Children’s Hospital, City of Youngstown Office on Minority Health, and Compass Family & Community Services.

“I don't want to be someone simply talking about good health.
I want people to see I’m involved and committed to the activities as well.
I really appreciate being one of many people in the community benefiting
from the healthy programs conducted in the Taft Promise Neighborhood.”
- Ira Cross

JOBS & ECONOMY

The Jobs & Economy Council, spearheaded by the City of Youngstown Department of Community and Economic Development and Mercy Health, builds workforce development and creates employment opportunities for residents. Some of the many members supporting this effort include the Business Resource Network, Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, Mahoning Columbiana Training Association, and the South Avenue Business Association.

I found a meaningful job as a State Tested Nurse Aid with
Mercy Health through the Taft Promise Neighborhood Job Fair.
Without a doubt it changed my life for the better.
Programs like this can change a lot of lives for the better.”
- Angel Walker

NEIGHBORHOOD & SAFETY

The Jobs & Economy Council, spearheaded by the City of Youngstown Department of Community and Economic Development and Mercy Health, builds workforce development and creates employment opportunities for residents. Some of the many members supporting this effort include the Business Resource Network, Eastgate Regional Council of Governments, Mahoning Columbiana Training Association, and the South Avenue Business Association.

“The installation of lights and cameras have made a huge difference in
making business owners and their patrons safer.  We have seen these things
successfully used in the apprehension of criminals and we’re confident
they have worked to deter other potential crimes.”
- Angel Cruz

RESIDENT ENGAGEMENT

Individual residents of the Taft Promise Neighborhood are the drivers of real change in the neighborhood.  They contribute valuable input from seats on each neighborhood council as well as their own Resident Council. Whether it’s an effort to organize groups to clean up around vacant homes and lots, assist older residents on their block, ensure kids are safe, or create other initiatives that contribute to building a better, stronger, and more resilient neighborhood, Resident Council members are involved, empowered, and a significant part of the change.

“The Taft Promise neighborhood has done an impressive job of engaging neighbors,
whether it’s bringing out 400 residents to the very first Block Party or
getting residents involved at Taft School in Project MORE (Mentoring in Ohio for Reading Excellence).
Door-to-door canvassing is not always easy but it’s paid off as more and more people are getting involved.”
- Tom Forestal

HELPING TAFT PROMISE NEIGHBORHOOD BUILD CAPACITY:
VISTA VOLUNTEERS

The coordination of Taft Promise Neighborhood programs and activities is made possible by a team of VISTA volunteers.

VISTA, or Volunteers in Service to America, is a national service program operated by the Corporation for National and Community Service which also oversees AmeriCorps.  The volunteers for Taft Promise Neighborhood are provided through Family & Community Services, Inc. based in Ravenna, Ohio.

VISTA members serve for one year terms, are typically from or near the Taft Promise Neighborhood, and work to strengthen the capacity of the TPN mission to stabilize and revitalize the neighborhood.

TPN currently staffs six AmeriCorps VISTAs annually. Each has a core set of responsibilities with one or more of the five Neighborhood Councils and TPN’s overall mission. Through the efforts of TPN’s VISTA volunteers, hundreds of hours of additional volunteer labor and thousands of dollars of in-kind donations and services have been leveraged in the effort to build a stronger Taft Promise Neighborhood.
