Focus on the WHOLE CHILD and the WHOLE FAMILY

Success After 6 provides wrap-around services to help break down barriers many of the students and their families face on a daily basis.  Our United Way works in partnership with the school to help the students achieve success.  We help the students realize their potential and encourages them to excel in the classroom.  We bring community partners to the table to best serve the children and their families.

Our United Way launched this initiative after holding community conversations throughout the Mahoning Valley.  We heard over and over that we need a safe haven for our children and more resources available to the families.

Our pilot program started at the Youngstown Community School for the 2015/2016 school year.  We expanded Success After 6 to Taft Elementary School in the Youngstown City School District for the 2016/2017 school year.  This year, 2018/2019 we will be in 13 school sites - 9  in the Youngstown City School District including -Martin Luther King Elementary, McGuffey Elementary, Paul C. Bunn Elementary, Taft Elementary, Kirkmere Elementary, Volney Elementary, and Wilson Elementary, and Harding Elementary - as well as Girard Prospect Elementary in the Girard City Schools District, Liberty Blott Guy PK - 6 School, and Campbell K-7 School.

Success After 6 will serve thousands of students and their families at each school through various enrichment programs, tutoring, health screenings, food pantries, clothing drives, and our main piece - an after-school program with our Education Partners and Enrichment Partners:  Mahoning County Educational Service Center, SMARTS - Students Motivated By the Arts, OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children's Center for Science and Technology, Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, Oak Hill Collaborative - Raspberry Pi, Chess is Life, and The Train Station

Data from the 2017/2018 school year indicates that the students enrolled in the SA6 after-school program are closing the achievement gap.

"Success After 6 has been one of the most successful programs as far as increasing attendance, reducing discipline incidents, and improving student performance on both state and benchmark assessments.”  - John LaPlante, Chief Information Officer, Youngstown City School District.

"I like Success After 6 because it has helped my daughter improve with her academics.  Gabrielle's social skills have improved.  She has achieved so much in class.  The do a lot for the kids' academics. They do a lot of things to keep the parents involved."
- Parent of Success After 6 First grader Gabrielle

“Being from the area we come from, some children don’t have the opportunity to be able to experience some things.  This program exposes them to so much.  Success After 6 has been a blessing to not just my son but to my entire family.  Thank you.”
- Parent of Success After 6 First grader Noah
